Lord of the Rings Movies Ranked: The Complete Middle-earth Tier List (2026)

Every Middle-earth movie: the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit trilogy, and The War of the Rohirrim, ranked from S-tier to D-tier. Then build your own Middle-earth tier list with head-to-head comparisons.

The Complete Middle-earth Tier List

Ranking the Lord of the Rings movies is almost a formality at the top. Peter Jackson's original trilogy is one of the most acclaimed achievements in film history, and all three belong in S-tier. The real debate starts with The Hobbit: a single short novel stretched into three films, beautiful in places and bloated in others. Here's the complete Middle-earth ranking, split into classic S/A/B/C/D tiers. Disagree about where the Hobbit films land? You should, and you can settle it yourself in minutes with Shortlist.

S

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

(2003)

Eleven Oscars, including Best Picture. The greatest fantasy finale ever filmed.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

(2001)

The one that proved it could be done. Still the most beloved of the three.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

(2002)

Helm's Deep, Gollum's introduction, and the franchise's best battle.

B

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

(2012)

Riddles in the Dark is sublime. The rest stretches one book too thin.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

(2013)

Smaug himself is spectacular. The barrel chase is pure fun.

C

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

(2014)

An entire film built from a single chapter. CGI-heavy and overlong.

The War of the Rohirrim

(2024)

A hand-drawn anime prequel. A bold swing that didn't quite connect.

How to Build Your Own Lord of the Rings Tier List

Most people's LOTR ranking is "the three good ones, then the three Hobbit ones." But pin someone down and the order gets surprisingly personal: is Fellowship or Return of the King really #1? The fastest way to settle it is with head-to-head comparisons:

  1. Open Shortlist and search "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" to find every film.
  2. Add them to a ranking: create a custom "Middle-earth" list so it only contains these movies.
  3. Compare head-to-head: the app shows you two films at a time. Pick the one you prefer. That's it.
  4. Watch your tier list form: your complete Middle-earth ranking builds itself in a couple of minutes.
  5. Share it: every ranking gets a shareable link. Post it, argue about it, send it to the group chat.

What Order Should You Watch the Lord of the Rings Movies?

For a first watch, go in release order: Fellowship (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). The trilogy was made and edited as one continuous story, and it builds flawlessly.

If you want to watch chronologically by Middle-earth timeline, start with the Hobbit trilogy: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies, which take place roughly 60 years before Fellowship. Most fans still recommend release order, because the Hobbit films are a weaker introduction and trade on Lord of the Rings nostalgia.

Extended Editions vs. Theatrical Cuts

A tier list ranks films, not cuts, but every Middle-earth fan has an opinion here. The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions add up to 2 hours of footage and are widely considered the definitive way to watch the trilogy. The Hobbit Extended Editions, by contrast, mostly add length to films many already felt were too long. If you're ranking, judge the version you actually watched.

Lord of the Rings Tier List FAQ

What is the best Lord of the Rings movie?

It's a two-film race. The Return of the King won 11 Academy Awards and is the most decorated of the trilogy, while The Fellowship of the Ring is the most beloved for its world-building and emotional core. Both are defensible #1 picks.

Are the Hobbit movies worth watching?

Yes, especially An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug. They're a clear step below the original trilogy, but Smaug, the Riddles in the Dark sequence, and Howard Shore's score make them well worth your time.

How many Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies are there?

There are six core films, three Lord of the Rings and three Hobbit, plus the 2024 animated prequel The War of the Rohirrim. A new live-action film, The Hunt for Gollum, is in development for a future release.

What about The Rings of Power?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an Amazon TV series, not a film, so it isn't in this movie tier list. You can rank it alongside other shows. See our TV show tier list guide.
