The Complete MCU Tier List
Sixteen years, thirty-three films, five phases. Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most debated question in modern blockbusters, and everyone's list is different. Here's ours, split into classic S/A/B/C/D tiers. Disagree? You should, and you can settle it yourself in minutes with Shortlist.
Avengers: Endgame
(2019)The payoff of a decade of storytelling. Nothing else comes close.
Avengers: Infinity War
(2018)Thanos actually won. A rare MCU film with real stakes.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
(2014)A political thriller disguised as a superhero movie. Still the gold standard.
Black Panther
(2018)Wakanda, Killmonger, a genuine cultural moment.
Guardians of the Galaxy
(2014)Turned a D-list cosmic team into the heart of the MCU.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
(2021)Fan service done right. The multiverse delivered.
Thor: Ragnarok
(2017)Taika Waititi rescued the Thor franchise with neon and comedy.
Iron Man
(2008)The movie that started everything. Still holds up.
The Avengers
(2012)The first time it all came together. The shawarma scene alone.
Captain America: Civil War
(2016)The airport fight, Spider-Man's debut, and a genuine moral conflict.
Doctor Strange
(2016)Visual spectacle and a fresh corner of the MCU.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
(2017)Tom Holland's Peter Parker nails the high school angle.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
(2017)Emotional but uneven. The Ego reveal lands.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
(2023)Rocket's backstory is devastating. A fitting send-off.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
(2021)The bus fight is one of the best action sequences in the MCU.
Deadpool & Wolverine
(2024)Fan service maxed out. Hugh Jackman returning makes it worth it.
Captain America: The First Avenger
(2011)Underrated. The Steve Rogers character work is top-tier.
Ant-Man
(2015)Small scale, big charm. Paul Rudd is perfect.
Spider-Man: Far From Home
(2019)Mysterio is a great villain, the European backdrop helps.

(2022)Works around the tragic loss. Uneven but meaningful.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
(2022)Raimi aesthetic, messy execution.
Thor
(2011)Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare-in-space take. Decent.
Iron Man 3
(2013)The Mandarin twist is still divisive.
Captain Marvel
(2019)Functional origin story, lacked real stakes.
Ant-Man and the Wasp
(2018)Fun but forgettable sequel.

Iron Man 2
(2010)A trailer for Avengers wearing a movie costume.
Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)Tonally confused. Christian Bale tried.
The Marvels
(2023)Flopped at the box office. Felt rushed.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
(2023)Kang's debut should have been bigger. Felt like a TV episode.
Eternals
(2021)Beautifully shot, narratively cold.
The Incredible Hulk
(2008)The MCU film Marvel pretends doesn't exist.

How to Build Your Own Marvel Movies Tier List
Ranking 33 films in your head is impossible. Star ratings don't work either: everything you like ends up a 4. The fastest way to build a real Marvel tier list is with head-to-head comparisons:
- Open Shortlist and search "Marvel" to find every MCU film.
- Add them to a ranking: Shortlist supports custom lists, so you can create a "MCU" list that only contains Marvel movies.
- Compare head-to-head: the app shows you two MCU films at a time. Pick the one you prefer. That's it.
- Watch your tier list form: after 20-30 comparisons, your complete Marvel ranking builds itself.
- Share it: every ranking gets a shareable link. Post it, argue about it, send it to the group chat.
You can read more about the comparison-based approach in our movie tier list guide.
Marvel Movies in Chronological vs. Release Order
Two legitimate ways to watch the MCU: release order (the way we all lived it) or chronological order (by when events happen in-story). Neither affects a tier list, a great movie is great regardless, but it's the other big "how should I watch Marvel?" question.
Release order is the default for first-time viewers. Iron Man (2008) sets up the universe's tone, and every subsequent film builds on what came before. Chronological order (starting with Captain America: The First Avenger in the 1940s) is a fun re-watch, but it spoils some of the universe's best surprises.
The Best Marvel Phases, Ranked
- Phase 3 (2016-2019): Civil War, Black Panther, Infinity War, Endgame. Peak MCU.
- Phase 1 (2008-2012): Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Avengers. The foundation.
- Phase 2 (2013-2015): Winter Soldier and Guardians carry weaker entries.
- Phase 5 (2023-present): Guardians Vol. 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine stood out. A rebuilding phase.
- Phase 4 (2021-2022): The hardest phase. Shang-Chi and No Way Home are the clear winners.
What About the Marvel TV Shows?
The Disney+ shows (Loki, WandaVision, Moon Knight, etc.) aren't in this list because that's a separate conversation, and a longer one. You can rank the MCU Disney+ shows in Shortlist the same way, in a separate ranking. Or see our TV show tier list guide for how to rank TV.
Marvel Tier List FAQ

Most critical rankings put Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther, or Captain America: The Winter Soldier at #1. The "best" depends on whether you value payoff (Endgame), craftsmanship (Winter Soldier), or cultural impact (Black Panther).
How many MCU movies are there in 2026?
As of early 2026, there are 33 theatrical MCU films in Phases 1-5 (not counting Disney+ TV series, shorts, or The Incredible Hulk's contested canon status).
