Where Spider-Man: Brand New Day Lands

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in theaters on July 31, 2026 and entered this list in A tier, and as of October 2026 that is where it stays. The placement is still provisional, made on reception rather than on a rewatch, because this page has one rule it will not bend: S tier means staying power, and a film released in July 2026 cannot have shown any yet. Its run was never the question. In September it passed The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film ever at the North American box office, a chase we tracked on the blog. Sony set its digital release, to rent or buy, for October 6, 2026, and a home release is where most people get the rewatch that settles it. The same rule kept The Odyssey out of S on our Christopher Nolan list in July despite a higher Tomatometer than anything else Nolan has made.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the pair who wrote all three of Tom Holland's previous solo films. What makes its opening numbers worth reading closely is not the headline score but the split underneath it.

Brand New Day is the lowest-reviewed of Tom Holland's four solo films by critics at 90%, and the highest-rated of the four by audiences at 98%. That +8 gap is the widest of the four, and it is double the gap on No Way Home, a film built end to end for a crowd. A split that shape usually means a film delivered hard on what its fans specifically wanted and gave the general reviewer less to admire, which is precisely the profile of a movie that ages either very well or not at all. Two years from now it belongs in S or in B. A tier is where we hold it until a rewatch settles that.

The premise explains some of the split. Brand New Day picks up directly from the ending of No Way Home: Doctor Strange's spell erased Peter Parker from the memory of everyone alive, and the new film finds him four years later, anonymous, protecting New York at street level while his powers evolve in a way the studio called "surprising and potentially dangerous." Tom Holland and Zendaya return alongside Jacob Batalon, and the supporting cast is a hard turn toward the street-level corners of the comics: Jon Bernthal's Punisher, Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando finally paying off the Scorpion tease from Homecoming, and Marvin Jones III as Tombstone. It is the first Spider-Man film in the series with no multiverse and no sky beam, and the audience that has been asking for exactly that appears to have gotten it.

How Long Does It Take to Watch Every Spider-Man Movie?

Every Spider-Man film, with its theatrical runtime. If you are catching up before you watch Brand New Day, in a theater or at home, the totals underneath are the ones that matter, and every one of them excludes the new film itself.

A complete Spider-Man marathon is 24h 37m. That is the whole character on film, in one sitting, which almost nobody should attempt. The useful numbers are the smaller ones:

• The full catch-up, live action only: 17h 55m across the 8 live-action films that came before it. The two Spider-Verse movies are a separate, self-contained Miles Morales story and have no bearing on Brand New Day.
• The sensible catch-up: 6h 50m for the Tom Holland trilogy. Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home are the continuous story Brand New Day continues as a fourth chapter.
• The minimum: 2h 28m. Rewatch No Way Home and you have everything the new film builds on, because it starts from that film's final scene.

Put differently: the difference between the minimum and the sensible catch-up is about four hours, and the difference between the sensible catch-up and watching all 11 is most of a working day.

The Spider-Man Eras Explained

The Raimi trilogy (2002-2007) stars Tobey Maguire and defined the modern superhero blockbuster. The Amazing Spider-Man films (2012-2014) star Andrew Garfield in a darker, short-lived reboot. The MCU films (2017-2026) star Tom Holland and integrate Spider-Man into the Avengers universe, with Brand New Day deliberately pulling him back out of it and down to street level. And the Spider-Verse films (2018-present) are animated, follow Miles Morales, and have redefined what the character can do on screen.

Every Spider-Man Movie at the Box Office

The eleven Spider-Man films have grossed $11.498B worldwide against $1.962B in production budgets, a blended 5.86x, and not one of them failed to clear the 2.5x line where a film becomes genuinely profitable. 3 of the eleven passed a billion dollars. The table below is every film with its gross, its budget and the return between them, sorted by return rather than by tier, because the two orders are not the same order and the gap between them is the most interesting thing on this page.

Spider-Man is the only franchise on this site with a clean sheet. Every one of the eleven films cleared 2.5x, and the worst of them still returned 3.47x. On the same measure the Marvel Cinematic Universe misses on 7 of its 38 films, and DC misses on 15 of the 27 it has released in cinemas, from a roster of 28 that includes one film made for streaming. Four studios, three lead actors and two animation houses have taken a run at this character across twenty-four years, and not one of those attempts lost money.

The most expensive Spider-Man film ever made is also its worst investment, and it is nineteen years old. Spider-Man 3 cost $258.0M in 2007, which is more than Brand New Day cost in 2026 at $225.0M and more than No Way Home cost at $200.0M. It grossed $895.0M, a genuinely large number that puts it fourth in the franchise by raw takings, and it still finishes last in the return column at 3.47x. This is the answer to the question people actually ask about that film: it was not a flop, it was a hit that cost too much to be a good one.

The opposite case is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the smallest film in the franchise by both columns and one of its best investments. It cost $90.0M and grossed $394.9M, the only Spider-Man film that did not reach $700 million, and it still out-returned Spider-Man 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, each of which grossed roughly twice as much. The two Spider-Verse films together were made for $190.0M, less than Spider-Man 3 cost on its own.

And the tier list disagrees with the money column exactly where it matters. Spider-Man 2 sits in S tier above, the film that held the title of best superhero movie for a decade, and it is 8th of 11 by return at 3.94x. Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads the money column at 11.09x and is placed in A tier, provisionally, for reasons that have nothing to do with what it earned. That gap is the entire argument for ranking these films yourself rather than reading anyone else's order, including ours: the money list and the quality list are not the same list, and neither of them is your list.
