The biggest animated movie of the summer is about to get a whole lot cheaper to watch. Toy Story 5 crossed $1.13 billion worldwide on the way to becoming one of 2026's defining blockbusters, and on September 23 it arrives on Disney+. If you would rather own it, the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions land a day earlier, on September 22.

After a theatrical run that opened June 19, a three-month window to streaming is brisk by Pixar standards. For anyone who skipped the multiplex or has a kid who will want to watch it on loop, the math just changed. Here is what is actually in the box, and where this one belongs in a studio catalog that already runs deep.

The Toys Versus the Screen

Toy Story has always been a franchise about obsolescence. The 1995 original was a story about a favorite toy, Woody, panicking that a shinier new arrival, Buzz Lightyear, would replace him in a kid's heart. Thirty-one years later the gang faces the rival every parent already knows by name: a screen.

In Toy Story 5, Bonnie receives a Lilypad tablet and becomes obsessed with it, which makes life exponentially harder for Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the crew. The tablet, voiced by Greta Lee, is the new threat to playtime, and Conan O'Brien turns up as a toy named Smarty Pants. It is a pointed premise for 2026, and a smart one: the series that once worried about plastic being outgrown now worries about it being out-scrolled.

That through-line is why the franchise keeps landing. The toys are never really fighting each other. They are fighting time, attention, and the next thing. Handing the villain role to a device is the most honest move the series could make right now.

Pixar spent the back half of the decade fighting the perception that its originals belonged on streaming rather than in theaters. Toy Story 5 was the answer. Built on a reported $250 million budget, it returned more than four times that at the global box office and became the second Toy Story film to cross a billion dollars, after Toy Story 4.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are back as Woody and Buzz, with Joan Cusack returning as Jessie.
