The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Just Hit D23. Here Is Everything It Tells Us.

Marvel saved its biggest swing for Friday night. At Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim, Kevin Feige walked out with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell to introduce a new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and easily the most anticipated movie left on the 2026 calendar. It arrives in theaters December 18.

We have seen glimpses before, including the Hall H footage at San Diego Comic-Con last month. This new look is different. It is the clearest picture yet of what kind of villain Downey's Victor von Doom actually is, and it ends on an image that had the Anaheim crowd screaming.

What the trailer actually shows

The spine of the trailer is a warning. Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm addresses a gathered room of heroes about the man she once knew, intercut with slow reveals of Doom's armored costume and his throne room. The footage leans hard into tragedy: it implies Doom's turn to villainy follows the loss of his wife and child, framing him less as a conqueror and more as a man with nothing left to lose.

That is the Infinity War playbook, and Marvel knows it. Thanos worked because the movie treated his logic seriously. Giving Doom a grief-driven motivation, delivered by the actor who once defined the franchise as Tony Stark, is the studio's biggest tonal bet since 2018.

Elsewhere in the footage, Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards confronts Doom amid a field of rubble, and Chris Hemsworth's Thor promises Doom a punishment he intends to take his time delivering. Then the closer: Doom raising and commanding an army of Sentinels, the mutant-hunting machines X-Men fans have waited decades to see done properly on this scale, and sending them at his enemies.

Three universes, one absurd cast

Marvel's official logline says it plainly: heroes from three distinct universes are set on a deadly collision course against an existential threat. In practice, that means the deepest bench ever assembled for a comic book movie.

• The Avengers side: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, and Simu Liu, among many others.
• The Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, fresh off The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
• The original X-Men: Ian McKellen's Magneto, Patrick Stewart's Professor X, James Marsden's Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer's Beast, Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler, plus Channing Tatum finally getting a real run as Gambit.

And then there is Chris Evans, back as Steve Rogers, presenting the trailer on stage alongside Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter. Marvel is saying nothing about the size of either role. The fact that Evans stood next to Feige at D23 rather than hiding in a post-credits surprise suggests his part is not a cameo.

Why this one matters

It has been seven years since an Avengers movie. Endgame closed the Infinity Saga in 2019, and everything since has been prologue of varying quality. Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed the two biggest MCU films ever made, are back in the chairs, working from a script credited to Stephen McFeely alongside Michael Waldron, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers. This film also sets the table for Avengers: Secret Wars, so whatever happens in December will define the next several years of the franchise.

Every Avengers movie has entered the MCU conversation near the top. Endgame and Infinity War routinely fight for the #1 spot in fan rankings, while Age of Ultron has spent a decade as the punching bag. Doomsday walks in with a harder job than any of them: it has to pay off a villain recast, a multiverse saga with a messy middle, and three franchises' worth of nostalgia at once.
